LUNA
Luna Vineyards was founded in 1995 by George Vare and Mike Moone with the aim of producing Italian varietal wines such as Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese. John Kongsgaard joined as partner and winemaker in 1996. "Canto" (song or poem) is Luna's blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the "Super Tuscan" style. Very small amounts were made from the very best barrels of each variety. In 1997 only 137 cases were produced. The blend is 34 Merlot, 33 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Sangiovese and 3 Syrah. In 1998, 600 cases were produced with the blend being 39 Sangiovese, 39 Merlot, 19 Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 Syrah. Proceeds to benefit Community Health Clinic Olé.
