During the years 1897/1898 Marius Bauer travelled through India and visited Jaipur in the north of the country around December 1897. In a letter adressed to Martha van Eeden-van Vloten and dated 23 December Bauer evokes the magical atmosphere of the city:'Er is heel wat te zien in de straten van Jaipur! Kamelen, panters, tijgers (deze laatste zitten in een galerij aan de straat) ruiters, optochten, honderden dingen, het een al mooier dan het ander. Ik kijk mijn ogen uit'. (M. Jansen, A.
