AN UNUSUAL EXPORT LACQUER BOX WITH THREE CADDIES
Early Period (Late 17th Century) Mounts, European, 18th Century
The box with hinged lid and four bracket feet, gilt metal keyhole plate and fitting for the handle on the lid, the exterior decorated in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief gold lacquer] on a black lacquer ground with figures and landscapes, the edges with conventional karakusa [floral] motifs, the metal parts in the form of flowering branches of chrysanthemum, the interior lined in green velvet and divided into one long narrow empty compartment and three rectangular compartments each containing a lacquered metal tea caddy, two of the caddies with circular lidded openings, the third apparently the same but with the whole cover sliding away, the interiors silvered, the exteriors decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a gold nashiji [gold flakes suspended in lacquer] ground with simple plant and landscape motifs, with functioning lock and key, some old wear and minor damage
