Of the usual form with bevelled edges, flush-fitting lid and interior tray; the exterior with black lacquer ground decorated in gold and aokin takamaki-e, gold foil, gold dust and applied silver with straw-laden boats tossed on dramatic stylised waves; the risers gold nashiji, the rims and ledges gold lacquer, the sides and base of the tray black lacquer, the other interior surfaces all fine gold nashiji, the interior of lid and tray decorated in gold and aokin hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with kikyo [Chinese bellflower] plants, the lid with the moon in applied silver; the base black lacquer, minor old wear
