AN IRON AND BRONZE FUTAMONO [LIDDED ORNAMENT]
Signed Hokoku, Mid-Meiji Period (Circa 1875-1900)
In the form of a drum on a stand, the drum with an integral lid covering a silver-lined container within the drum, surmounted by a cockerel in bronze with gilt details, the drum of iron decorated in copper, shibuichi [copper-silver alloy], silver, gold and low-relief iron with on one side a dragon and on the other with a long-tailed cockerel, each with a tomoe [comma] roundel in the centre and a border of descending lappets, the sides worked to imitate the strongly grained wood used for making drums and with decoration of vine leaves, the four-legged stand with formal ornament in gold overlay, signed underneath in incised characters on a silver plaque Maezawa Hokoku
