THREE BRONZE VASES
Mid-Meiji Period (Circa 1875-95)
The first with dark brown patination, of sorori form with a splayed foot, the neck extended by a splayed mouth inlaid with descending lappets in gold, the foot with silver keyfret patterns, the main decoration of the body consisting of a flowering cherry tree, clouds and a stream in relief and engraving embellished with gold and silver, the neck with two bands of gold wire and two enamel diaper medallions, 8 3/8in. (21.3cm.) high; the second in a style associated with the Kiryu Kosho Kaisha (see lot 79), also with dark brown patination, of elongated ovoid form with a short splayed neck, decorated in gold, silver and highly patinated copper with flowering stems of poppy, some still in bud, the shoulder and foot with flat inlay of butterflies and formal ornament in gold, silver and copper, 8 1/8in. (20.7 cm.) high; the third with pale brown patination, of sorori form, the neck relieved by a raised band of shibuichi or shakudo nanako overlaid with six enamelled paulownia leaves, the foot-ring with a recessed band shibuichi or shakudo [copper-silver or copper-silver alloy] with nanako granulation, the main decoration on the body consisting of maple leaves floating down a stream, in gold, copper, silver and enamelling, signed on the base in incised characters Toshimasa, 9 3/8in.
