A crisply carved three-clawed dragon, clasping a sacred pearl in one of its front feet, the head rising above a tightly coiled body, the eyes inlaid in gilt metal with ebony or dark horn pupils, the himotoshi formed by the tail, signed underneath the tail in incised and stained characters Masanao (Yamada, Ise Province)
