A STAINED IVORY NETSUKE
With Signature Tomotada, Edo Period (19th Century)
A recumbent female water buffalo, its neck turned to the right, its head and right hind leg protecting a calf which lies by its side, a halter around the adult's nose, the eyes inlaid in dark horn, rendered in finely incised and stained hairwork, the himotoshi formed by a large, curved hole in front of the adult animal's left haunch and a smaller round hole by its right foreleg, signed with incised and stained characters on a rectangular reserve on the adult animal's left haunch Tomotada (Kyoto)
