Signed Toshichika, Late Meiji Period (Circa 1900)
Elaborately carved with a group of one female, one adolescent and three male courtiers, all of them wielding brushes and painting one another, the female also wielding a hiogi fan, one of the male courtiers trampling underfoot another figure in priestly dress, signed underneath in stained and incised characters Nihon Tokyo Shimamura Toshiaki monjin Toshichika tsukuru [made by Toshichika, pupil of Shimamura Toshiaki of Tokyo in Japan]; slight old damage, wood stand
