Lot Essay

The Mary Cassatt Committee will include this painting in the forthcoming newly revised Cassatt catalogue raisonné.

This painting is of the daughter of a neighbour of the artist in Mesnil-Theribus. In a letter to her friend, the celebrated collector Louisine Havemeyer (see also note to lot 123), dated 24 October 1910, Mary Cassatt wrote 'I am just finishing a little portrait of my neighbour's little girl... He already has one in pastels of her and another with her mother and little brother. He does so love this child who is very pretty and a nice child and begged me to paint her this time. If all sitters were like her it would not be hard'.
