Lot Essay

The authenticity of the present work has been kindly confirmed by Dr Marian Bisanz-Prakken in a letter dated 30.04.01, stating that it will be included in the forthcoming supplement to the catalogue raisonné of Klimt drawings.

Increasingly towards the end of his life Klimt, executed his drawings as autonomous works, with no larger or more finished version in mind. Porträt einer jungen Frau does relate to a similar work, Fraenkopf im Dreiviertelprofil nach links, but may be seen to form part of the artist's ongoing search to depict the female figure in its many postures and sensual attitudes.
