Van Dongen illustrated numerous texts throughout his career and was popular with authors, due to his ability to combine solid draftsmanship with an acquired characterisation often verging on bitter humour. Jupien et Charlus (lot 455) and L'Hôtel de Guermantes (lot 456), produced to illustrate Marcel Proust's A la Recherche du Temps Perdu in 1947, displays his skill in capturing a moving scene with a few incisive brush strokes.
