etchings and drypoints, 76 subjects from the total oeuvre of 93, including impressions of the famous self-portraits (two copies of F.1, and three of F.2), many in duplicate impressions on different papers, the total being 189 plates, the majority with margins, many with old hinges on the reverse sheet corners, otherwise in good to very good condition, (3 albums)

Lot Essay

Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine was a history painter, portraitist and printmaker who spent much of his career in Poland as the court painter to King Stanislas. He made the first of his etchings, heavily influenced by Rembrandt, whilst in Poland in 1773. Upon the abdication in 1804, Norblin returned to Paris, where he continued printmaking, and adding to his collection of works by the master.
