Further details
William Henry Knight arrived in London in 1845 to study as a painter at the Royal Academy Art Schools. He initially worked as a portrait painter before establishing a reputation as an artist of both humorous and "pathetic" genre scenes, usually of children. He painted mostly on a small scale, the present picture being a good example of his style. Knight exhibited at the Royal Academy (1846-62), at the British Institute and at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, London.
