A HISTORIC LETTER OF WELCOME TO H.H. STEPHENSON (1833-1896), captain of the the first England XI to visit Australia. The English team arrived at Sandridge [Port Melbourne] in the early hours of Christmas Eve, 1861, having spent 60 days at sea. Despite the warm reception that the players received from the St. Kilda club, and the tumultuous response from the public in general, this first tour was not free from controversy and, following earlier England tours against 22-man teams in Ireland and America, a dispute developed with regard to the agreed number of Australian players. Stephenson argued that his men were not fit to play so soon after their long journey, and it was eventually settled that they would compete against an 18-man team. The England XI played their first game at the M.C.G. on a very hot New Year's Day in 1862 but went on to beat eighteen of Victoria by an innings. They enjoyed a further six victories on tour, drew four and lost just two matches.
