Further details
Although England lost the opening match of the 1911-12 series, J.W.H.T. Douglas then led a magnificent English side to victory in the remaining four Tests to regain the Ashes. The brilliant batting of Hobbs, who scored three centuries and made an aggregate of 662 runs in nine innings for an average of 82.75, was vital to England's success. The first wicket stand of 323 runs made by Hobbs and Rhodes in the fourth Test at Melbourne (Rhodes scoring 179, just one more run than his partner) became an enduring English record against Australia.
