Further details
These autographs were collected by the County and Test cricketer John Richard Mason (1874-1958) for his sister Olive Mason (d.1974) who closely followed both of her brothers' cricket careers. J.R. Mason played 300 matches for Kent (1893-1914) and began his career with the county side at the young age of 19 before captaining the team between 1889-1902 (the period during which these autographs were collected). He went on to tour with Stoddart to Australia in 1897/98, appearing in all five matches and with Kent to the United States (1903). Mason hit 1000 runs in a season eight times and in 1901 he achieved 1,561, av. 36.30 and took 100 wickets for the only time (118, av. 20.44) and so achieved the 'double'. His brother J.E. Mason made an appearance for Kent in 1900.
Mason's sister was a huge follower of Victor Trumper and collected the articles relating to Trumper's and to her brother's career. Mason in turn was able to collect an exclusive collection of autographs from county, University and touring cricket teams because of his close links and friendships with the players.
