Albert Edward Sterner was born in London to American parents and studied at l'Académie Julian, Paris with Boulanger, Lefevre and Gérome. In 1879 he travelled to the United States and founded an atelier in New York. He won a distinction at the Salon de Paris in 1891, a bronze medal at the 1900 Paris Exhibition and a gold medal at Munich in 1905. He predominantly worked as a genre artist and as an illustrator and engraver. The Metropolitan Musuem of New York currently holds a large collection of his works.
