Henri Frédérique Varenne was born in Chantilly and went on to study under A. Dumont. He exhibited stautettes and busts at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1866 and was awarded the distinction of Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900.
He died in Tours in 1933. (For listing, see: James Mackay, The Dictionary of Sculptors in Bronze, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1977.
The present sculpture was taken from an original model by Varenne c.1920 and the foundary marks refer to the famous Susse Frères foundary that was based in Paris.
