carved and pierced with one bearded figure standing on a barrel beside a large mallet holding a smaller mallet and a sack over his left shoulder, a further bearded figure seated beside holding down a large fish, signed Hozan on a red lacquer tablet to base -- 4in. (10.2cm.) high; another ivory okimono of a bearded scholar, standing holding an opium pipe and walking stick, an attendant seated beside him pruning a bonsai plant, signed Ryusei on a red lacquer tablet to base -- 4 5/8in. (11.7cm.) high; and a small ivory okimono of a fisherman, modelled standing, holding a large fish and one foot raised on a basket -- 3 3/8in. (8.5cm.) high, (minor wear).
