Lot Essay

This stamp was used between 1803 and 1813 during the collaboration of Georges Jacob and his son François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter
The design for these X-shaped tabourets is included in Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine's Receuil de Décorations Intérieures, which was published in 1801. The design includes two views of the tabouret, from the front and the side, and illustrates the precious passementerie with bejewelled tassles and fringes. The description specifies that the tabourets were executed in Paris and were destined for the château de St. Cloud (L. de Groër, Les arts décoratifs de 1790 à 1850, Fribourg, 1985, p. 151, fig. 286).

A closely related pair of tabourets was sold from the collection of Rene Fribourg, Sotheby's London, 17 October 1963, lot 707 and a further pair was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 25 November 1988, lot 142 (£16,500).
