Lot Essay

This bronze is derived from a statuette of an executioner displaying the head of St. John the Baptist, on a reliquary in San Giovanni Decollato, Rome, attributed by Toesca to Duquesnoy, with the support of Dr. Jennifer Montagu (loc. cit.).
