Lot Essay

This exquisitely rendered head appears to be solid-cast, and may originally have been intended to function as an elaborate handle or finial. The expressive quality of the face suggests a Germanic origin, although the colour of the alloy and patina, as well as details such as the execution of the hair, are more typically Italian.
