Lot Essay

Although the striking use of carved masks vigorously combined with strapwork and garlands of foliage might suggest an attribution to Rome, the distinctive high-hipped profile of the legs, combined with lion's paw feet, may point to a Tuscan origin for these imposing consoles which support slabs of richly veined brocatello di Spagna. A pair of consoles in the Palazzo Pitti, attributed to Lucca, with the same profile to the legs in combination with paw feet is illustrated in E. Colle ed., I Mobili di Palazzo Pitti: Il primo periodo lorenese 1737-1799, Florence, 1992, p. 199, cat. 141, while a pair of armchairs in the Palazzo Pitti, also attributed to Lucca and with cabriole legs carved with paw feet and masks, is illustrated op. cit., p. 160, cat. 95.
