Lot Essay

This elegant set of caned rococo chaises have a number of constructional and decorative features which suggest a South German rather than French origin. These characteristics are the typical rounded contours of the seat-rails and the legs, and the rectilinar outline of the interior of the seat-rails which does not follow their exterior undulation. They are closely related to a set of dining-chairs, which was executed around 1765 for the Speisesaal of the Residenz in Munich. These are listed in the 1769 inventory of the Palace as :'30 Sessel mit geschnittenen, Weiß grundiert und zier vergoldeten gestellen auf geis füssen' (B. Langer et.al, Die Möbel der Residenz München, Munich, 1996, vol. II, pp. 195-196 and 299).
