Lot Essay

François Mondon (1694-1770), maître by 1730.
Specialised in the use of dark-coloured veneers, François Mondon worked mainly in the Régence style, although a few Louis XV pieces are also known to have come from his workshop in rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine. His son François Antoine took over the workshop after his death in 1770.

The brand 'EHB' was employed by he famous dealer and entrepeneur, Edward Holmes Baldock, whose business on Hanway Street flourished between 1805 and 1843. Baldock effectively acted as a marchand-mercier and specialised in the sale of 18th century French furniture and Sèvres porcelain. He also altered furniture and remounted porcelain to accomodate the tastes of his aristocratic English clientele.
