Lot Essay
A virtually identical commode, save for differing mounts, is in the James A. de Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor (illustrated in G. Bellaigue, Furniture , Clocks and Gilt Bronzes, Fribourg, 1974, vol. I, pp. 233-5, cat. 51). Bellaigue attributes this commode, together with another of the same design, formerly with Frank Partridge & Sons Ltd, and a secretaire formerly in the collection of the Dowager Lady Swaythling (sold Sotheby's, 25 June 1965, lot 165), to the same unidentified maker.
The same distinctive entwined-ribbon framing the drawers also features on a pair of demilune commodes by Martin Ohneberg, formerly in the collection of Edouard Larcade, sold Sotheby's London, 17 May 1968, lot 48.
