The château de Ferrieres (Seine-et-Marne) served as a hunting lodge for Baron James de Rothschild (d. 1868), who entertained Napoleon III at his recently completed château in 1862. It was built from 1853 to the designs of Joseph Paxton of Paxton and Stokes, builders of Mentmore, Buckinghamshire for Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild (d. 1874). Its magnificent interior decoration, including a celebrated 'living-room' hall, was carried out from 1875 by the artist Eugene Lami (d. 1890) and during the 1920s further Art Deco furnishings were introduced for Baronne Edouard de Rothschild (d. 1949) (P. Prévost-Marcilhacy, Les Rothschilds: bâtisseurs et mécènes, Paris, 1995).
