Lot Essay

Charles Topino, maître in 1773.

The delicate floral garlands adorning the frieze of this finely inlaid console are typical of the work of Charles Topino. Similar floral garlands feature on a group of marquetry demilune commodes by Topino, including a pair formerly in the collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore Towers, sold Sotheby's house sale, 19 May 1977, lot 467, and another pair formerly in the collection of Miss Alice de Rothschild, sold Christie's New York, 23 October 1998, lot 166.
A related console by Topino was sold Christie's New York, 23 May 1995, lot 242 ($47,150).
