Lot Essay

The present large marble group is a faithful representation of the antique original which was discovered around the year 1600 on land adjoining the Lateran Palace. Various interpretations of its allegorical significance have been put forward, but it is generally agreed to represent the power of love, represented by the figure of Cupid, over other, baser, emotions.

Bartolomeo Cavaceppi lived his entire life in Rome, initially restoring antiquities such as those in the collections of Cardinal Albani and the Capitoline Museum. He later began to act as a dealer himself, and gained an international reputation providing restored antiquities, and copies of antiquities, to wealthy art collectors across Europe.
