Lot Essay

The channelled scrolling ormolu mounts of these vases are related to those on a pair of ormolu-mounted rouleau vases, previously in the J. Paul Getty Museum, which are illustrated in F. Watson, Mounted Oriental Porcelain, Washington, 1986, p. 116 and fig. 44, which were subsequently sold at Christie's New York, 31 October 1996, lot 318 ($ 42,000). A further pair of similary mounted Berlin porcelain vases, signed BORMANN TO THE MOUNTS, WAS SOLD AT SOTHEBY'S LONDON, 3 NOVEMBER 1976, WHICH RAISES THE POSSIBLY THAT THESE MOUNTS ARE GERMAN AND POSSIBLY BY THE SAME MAKER.
