Lot Essay

Darondeau exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1827-1841 and submitted this work for the Prix de Rome of 1848. In this scene, he draws inspiration from the artistic traditions of the Italian Renaissance and contemporary Neapolitan life; a favoured subject for Romantic painters of the early Nineteenth Century.
