A walnut chest, English, late 17th century
with a moulded twin plank lid above foliate lunette carved friezes, the sides and twin panel front carved with whirl filled double heart motifs, with a lower channel moulded frieze rail with gouged detailing and scroll carved apron, on stile feet -- 46in. (117cm.) wide, 23in. (58cm.) high, 22½in. (57cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The double heart motif is typically associated with the West Country. See Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.455, fig.4.57 for a chest with related decoration. To find a chest made solely of walnut is particularly unusual.
