Lot Essay

Brass society emblems were commonly produced in the West Country, as decorative elements representative of the name of the inn, inwhich the society members of the particular local parish met. In this instance, the two men shaking hands represented The Salutation. These mutual aid societies evolved from the late 18th century and by 1801 there were at least 5,000. Contributing members received various benefits in times of need and participated in various feast days and parades, during which the poles were displayed.
