A box wood figural nutcracker, possibly Austrian or South German, 19th century
lever action, the head carved in a Renaissance style helmet surmounted by a squirrel, mounted on a panel pedestal base, the tapering square section handles carved with a stylised guilloche ornament, the reverse carved with an animalistic mask -- 11¾in. (30cm.) high

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Edward H.Pinto Treen and Other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Plate 71 illustrates a nutcracker of similar form, carved with Hercules astride the Nemean lion, and dated 1570. Pinto attributes his boxwood example to an Italian origin.
