Lot Essay

The distinctive stretcher arrangement is a form used by Gillows in Lancaster, although in every other respect this chair typifies the West Country tradition. Examples of the Gillow model have been sold in these rooms on 21st February 2000, lot 319, and on 23rd February 2000, lot 396. It is interesting to surmise whether a chair such as this lot gave inspiration to the firm of Gillows for their own Windsor chair design which has a unique combination of elements.
