Lot Essay

The iconography of the scene relates to the story of St. Helena, mother of Constantine I, who is said to have found the True Cross in the early 4th century A.D. The story relates that she dug up three crosses at Golgotha, the site of the Crucifixion. Unable to distinguish the True Cross from the others, a corpse was placed onto each. The body placed on the True Cross was miraculously revived.
