This pair of cassolettes correspond to a design in Matthew Boulton's (d. 1809) Pattern Book V, p. 33 and reproduced in N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, pl. 163, fig. o. An almost identical pair, but with white marble bodies, was sold anonymously, Phillips London, 23 November 1999, lot 157 (£29,900 inc. premium). A related pair, but grander, of perfume-burners are in the collection of the Earls of Bradford, Weston Park, Shropshire, illustrated in Goodison, ibid. , fig. 134. Another pair of the latter model was sold by Mrs Gabriella Keiller, in these Rooms, 4 July 1996, lot 278 (£58,400 inc. premium).
