A SILVER REPOUSSEE FRAMED MIRROR
Probably Sicilian, 1st half 18th Century, unmarked
The later rectangular bevelled plate in an egg-moulded border and C-scroll and foliate serpentine frame chased with shells and flowers, the cresting surmounted by a cross and centred by a cabachon now applied with the ormolu crest of an owl and a motto 'BE FAST' for the Savile family, with distressed 18th Century red silk damask to the reverse and name-tag embroidered 'GALLERY ROOM', previously but not originally with an easel support

Provenance
Probably acquired by either Richard Lumley-Savile, later 9th Earl of Scarbrough (d. 1894) or
John, 1st Baron Savile of Rufford (d. 1896), Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire and by descent at Rufford to
George, 3rd Baron Savile of Rufford (b. 1919) sold Christie's and Knight, Frank and Rutley house sale, 11 October 1938, lot 284. Bought by Dr. Till from Bernard Edinborough Antiques, Stamford with a pair of 18th Century bookstands for £37.10.0, October 1938.

Lot Essay

Dr. Till had the mirror restored (the old lacquer was removed and it was re-lacquered) by Spink in August 1961 (£20.0.0).
