The oval moulded padded back with exposed back strut, the serpentine seat and the arm-supports upholstered in close-nailed red leather, above a fluted seat-rail, the arms on scrolled reeded downswept supports, on fluted tapering legs headed by patera and carved foliage, on oval-panelled herm feet, with pegged construction, the covering distressed, repairs

The medallioned back 'cabriolet' armchair, in the French manner, became fashionable in the 1770s, and the antique-fluted columnar feet of these chairs have tapered stumps sunk with medallions in the manner of the Harewood House hall chairs supplied in the early 1770s by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, l978, vol. II, p. 97, fig. 159).
