Lot Essay

The cabinet-maker William Gomm of Clerkenwell Close, illustrates similar serpentine-crested armchairs, arranged around the walls, in his designs for a drawing-room, dated 1761 (and now in the Henry Francis Du Pont Winterthur Museum, Delaware)(C. Saumarez-Smith, Eighteenth-Century Decoration, London, 1993, pp. 244-245).
The serpentine-crested back and scrolled arms of this bergere relate to those of the pair of sofas from the Dalmahoy Suite, sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 13 November 1997, lot 70.
