This elegant sideboard-table, with tablet-centred and antique-fluted frieze and flute-enriched, hermed and stump-footed legs, epitomises the restrained antique or Roman fashion introduced at Thomas Chippendale Senior's St Martins Lane workshops in the 1770s by his son Thomas Chippendale Junior (d. 1822), author of Sketches of Ornament, 1779.
It is conceivable that this table was supplied to Ninian Home (d. 1795) in the 1770s for the Entrance Hall at Paxton, Berwickshire, as its pattern corresponds to the sideboard supplied for the Dining-Room around 1776. The tablets of the Paxton table are enriched with a ram-mask and husk-festooned medallions in harmony with the room's stuccoed wall-decorations, which are after the antique or 'arabesque' manner as featured in Chippendale Junior's Sketches of 1779.
