Lot Essay

Gillows' design for a similar drum table made for George Smith Esq., in September 1795 appears in the Estimate Sketch Book (no 33,297) although the base is of four splayed legs (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, p. 163, fig. 27). A table corresponding to this model was supplied to the 2nd Lord Clonbrock, by Gillows for Clonbrock, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway and was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 July 2000, lot 45 (£56,400 inc. premium). A design for a table for C. Taylor Esq. corresponding to the base of the present table appears in the Estimate Sketch Book, October 1821. A similar centre table by Gillows is at Penrhyn, Caernarvonshire, and is illustrated in S. Parissien, Regency Style, p. 200.
