The 'tallboy' chest-of-drawers, with its superbly figured mahogany, is typical of Messrs Gillows' furniture of the early George III period. The 'ogee' bracket foot had featured in their Estimate Sketch Books since the early 1760s, but the Roman plinth-enriched pediment and medallioned handles are typical of their cabinet-furniture of the 1780s (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, figs. 134). The lower chest-of-drawers relates to that of a secretaire-press atttributed to Gillows and sold from Mere Hall, Cheshire, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 131.
