The silver dial signed CHRONOMETER BY JOHN PENLINGTON No. 3 PARKER STRT. LIVERPOOL No. 857, bold Roman hour numerals within outer minute chapter with Arabic five-minute intermarkers 60-5-10 et seque, subsidiary seconds dial (at VI) blued steel hands, top-plate signed Ger.Hornby & Son, Liverpool No. 857, cut bimetallic balance with segmental heat compensation weights, blued steel helical balance spring, spring foot detent (later) with jewelled locking stone, bowl and square-section gimbal in three-tier plain mahogany box with external brass drop handles, the bottom with pierced projections on the left and right side for securing to ship's chart table.

This chronometer was one of two early 19th century marine chronometers - CHRONOMETERS ~A~ & ~B~ respectively - by Liverpool makers that were carried and used onboard the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2 on her maiden voyages from 16th December 1968 and 22nd April 1970. A certificate confirming this, issued and signed by Captain W.E.(~Bill~) Warwick a MASTER of Q.E.2 dated 4th June 1970 accompanies the chronometer. In May 1970 it was placed on loan with the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and in 1971 it was transferred to Liverpool Maritime Museum where it has been on loan until 2001.

The other chronometer -CHRONOMETER A- carried in Q.E.2 was Robert Roskell No. 216/33501: this is at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
