The hood (formerly rising) with later stepped top and rectangular glazed side panels, lacking twist columns, the trunk with moulded frame (later mouldings, some losses) to a door with reserves of bird and flower marquetry and central lenticle (later frame), reveneered sides, with conforming marquetry to the plinth raised on later base, the 11in. square gilt-brass dial with engraved border, cherub mask and foliate spandrels to a silvered chapter ring with elaborate cross half hour and half quarter hour markers, signed Rich. Baker Londini fecit, the matted centre with engraving around the date aperture and ringed winding holes, formerly with seconds ring, with restored hour hand, later seconds hand and lacking minute hand, the five ringed pillar movement with inside countwheel strike on bell; case associated to dial and movement

Lot Essay

Baker, Richard. Free of the Clockmakers' Company 1685, d.1700. Apprenticed to John Chatfield through the Blacksmiths' Company, then transfered in 1683 to Richard Browne, clockmaker. Made a freeman in the Clockmakers Company in June 1685 by redemption by order of the Lord Mayor. Died in 1700 but in 1710 his wife Jane is still recorded as carrying on the business and taking on an apprentice (see Brian Loomes The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain, NAG Press, 1981, p.66).
