Lot Essay

The statue on which this model is based was found near Naples, and is a Roman copy of a Greek original, probably dating to circa 410 B.C. Many copies were made during the Roman period, the statue becoming a model for the Venus Genetrix who was claimed as an ancestor of the Julian imperial family.
