Lot Essay

A smaller version of this drawing is in the Uffizi, Florence, A. De Marchi in Domenico Beccafumi e il suo tempo, exhib. cat., Siena, Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, 1990, no. 91. The Uffizi drawing shows numerous differences from the present drawing: the background trees are better defined in the latter and the seated putto at the left is absent in the former. Both drawings are probably products of Beccafumi's studio, based on a lost drawing by the master. The firmer penwork in this sheet, compared to the Uffizi one, ressembles that of Beccafumi's pupil Marco Pino.
