Lot Essay

A sheet similar in technique, size and composition illustrating the Calling of Saint Matthew, is in the Uffizi, A. Petrioli Tofani and G. Smith, Sixteenth Century Tuscan Drawings from the Uffizi, exhib. cat., Detroit Institute of Arts and elsewhere, 1988, pp. 146-147, no. 63. Other examples of Cosci's draughtsmanship, including one of the same subject, are in the Louvre, F. Viatte, Dessins toscans, 1560-1640, Paris, 1988. nos. 32-41. In 1592 Cosci painted an altarpiece of The Adoration of the Shepherds for the church of S Francesco, in Volterra.
