Lot Essay

By the same hand as a drawing in Princeton recently exhibited in New York at the Pierpont Morgan Library and elsewhere, Tiepolo and His Circle, 1997, no. 90. Bernard Aikema distinguished three similar hands responsible for the group of sheets formerly attributed to Raggi. He points out that many of the drawings relate to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's works from the 1720s and early 1730s and that at least one of the artists responsible for these drawings must have worked closely with Tiepolo. The rather schematic definition of the shapes is akin to Tiepolo's drawings from that period, such as one also exhibited in New York in 1997, no. 8.
